Savannah has two specialities. Fresh fish and Low Country Cuisine. When buying fish go for grouper or shrimp. Both are caught locally by the nearby Tybee Island fishing fleet. Oysters are large and sweet, they are local, the best from the Beaufort area in South Carolina. Look for the scored flounder, served by both the Pink House and Garibaldi's. The shrimp in the touristy River Street area is probably not local, the better restaurants are your best bet.
Low Country cuisine is corn, grity, sausage, shrimp and more southern comfort food. This is best found at Mrs Wilkes Boarding House. An experience in itself. It is located on Jones Street and the line starts at around 10am. Expect to wait up to one hour to get in, you will not regret the wait.
